Dear Parents,
Here's s a quick review of what's new in kindergarten!

READING/PHONICS: We have completed units 5- 7 in Superkids club. In this student book the Superkids take turns thinking of fun things to do. Ask your child to tell you about the exciting adventures in this book. Please take time to review the stories and skills your child has learned in this book. In this book your child learned to write capital and lowercase Pp, Vv and Ww and to identify the sounds for these letters. Please practice reading with your child every day.

MATH: We are working on Topic 12 - Measurement


SCIENCE: This week we learned the importance of keeping our beautiful planet Earth healthy. We also planted seeds and learned about plants.

RELIGION: We are continuing to work on Unit 4. (Jesus wants us to Share God's Love)

Reading/Phonics:
We have almost finished the first half of the Superkids series. So far we have learned the short sound of the vowels a, e, i, o and u. It is very important that the children know all the letters and sounds we have learned so far. Please pay special attention to the vowel sounds. The children are continuing to learn many new words. Please practice at home. Our last student book for Unit 13 (U) is about (Us) all the Superkids. We will complete this book next week.

MATH: We are working on Topic 7 - Understanding Addition.

100 DAYS OF SCHOOL:
We are counting down to the 100th day of school on Monday, February 13th. As part of our 100th day activities We are asking that each child bring in and display a collection of 100 things. Use your imagination! Example: 100 buttons, 100 candy hearts, 100 paperclips. We look forward to seeing your projects!

SERVICE PROJECT:
Yesterday our class watched a play about helping our global community. As part of service month R.A. is raising money for Heifer International an organization that
works with communities all over the world to end poverty and hunger.
Kindergarten will raise money throughout the month of February to purchase
and animal for a family in need. More information will be sent home next Wednesday.

Here's what's new!

READING/PHONICS: We have completed Unit 12 (H) about a Superkid named Hot Rod. Hot Rod wants to be a race car driver and drive a car called "The Fast Cat". In this unit the children learned to name and write capital H and lowercase h, and listened for the sound of h at the beginning of words. They also learned to read the memory word "the". The children are learning many new words. Please practice" blending" with your child at least ten minutes each day.

MATH: We have completed Topic 6 - Numbers to 100.

Dear Parents,
Here's what's new!

READING/PHONICS: We are working on Unit 11 about a Superkid named Ettabetta. Ettabetta loves puzzles and games. In this unit the children learned to name and write capital E and lowercase e. They learned the short sound of /e/ as in elf and listened for the sound at the beginning and in the middle of words.

MATH: We are working on Topic 6 - Numbers to 100.

SOCIAL STUDIES: We are learning about Martin Luther King. We are learning about Martin's dream that people of all colors would learn to love and respect each other.

Thank you so much for all the wonderful Christmas presents. I am very blessed to have such a thoughtful class!

Erica- the tribe of Native Americans that helped the pilgrims where called the Wampanoag.
Rachele- boy turkeys are called Tom.
Zoe- the skin around the turkeys beak is called a Snood.
Luca- the Native Americans planted a fish with the seeds to make the corn grow tall.
Anthony- a baby turkey is called a poult.
Gabriella- Kings James was mean to the pilgrims.
Sydney-the pilgrims made friends with the Native Americans.

Dear Parents,
Here is the news from kindergarten.

READING/PHONICS: We are working on the Student Book for Unit 7 (L) about a Super- kid named Lily. Lily loves her family of little lion dolls. In this unit the children are learning to write capital L and lowercase l, and to listen for the sound of l at the beginning and at the end of words. The children wrote missing letters to complete words. This unit features a special lullaby that lily sings to her lion dolls. Ask your child to sing the lullaby to you or another lullaby that you both know. This book will be sent home next week.

MATH: Topic 4 In this chapter the children are learning to count, read and write numbers to 10 and to compare and order numbers to 10. We will complete this chapter next week.

RELIGION: On Tuesday, we celebrated All Saints Day. We are learning that saints lived their lives loving God and always tried to share God's love with others.

THANKSGIVING UNIT: We are preparing for this special day through stories, songs and art projects. We will act out the story of the First Thanksgiving in class each day. Encourage your child to tell you what he/she has learned. We are also learning to thank God for all our blessings.

Thanksgiving Drive: During the month of November we are collecting food and money for those in need. The kindergarten children are asked to bring in two boxes/bags of stuffing mix for the food drive. We are also collecting money to give to the Little Sisters of the Poor and the Saint Vincent DePaul Society. Thank you for your kindness and generosity. We will have a Thanksgiving prayer Service on November 23 at 11:00 in the Church.

Dear Parents,
Here what's new this week of school . . .

READING/PHONICS: We have completed the Student Book for Unit 5(D) about a Superkid named Doc. The children listened to a song about how Doc fixes broken toys and invents new things. In this unit the children learned to name and write capital D and lowercase d and to identify this letter at the beginning and at the end of a word. In this unit the children learned to read and write Doc, odd and dog, using the letters we have learned so far. Please review this book at home with your child and practice some of the new skills they have learned.

SCIENCE: We have been learning about our 5 senses. We will complete this unit next week.

Social Studies: Ms. Jen from the New York Historical Society visited our class, to begin a year long project with the children. This month she focused on artifacts or objects that help us learn about how people lived in the past. We will keep you updated on this special project.

HALLOWEEN: We are preparing for this special day through, stories, songs, and special art projects. Please plan a comfortable costume for your child to wear on this day. No play weapons or masks will be allowed. Please make sure your child is able to use the bathroom and walk comfortably.
During the morning the eighth grade class will host our Halloween party. Snack and a craft will be provided. In the afternoon we will watch a Halloween video and have cupcakes and juice. Please let me know in writing if you do not wish your child to have juice and cupcakes, you may send in an alternate snack. If you would like to send in goodie bags please do not write individual names on them; this will make it easier for us to distribute the loot. Please send in any treat bags on or before Friday. If anyone would like to donate any thing for our celebration, please speak to me Monday at dismissal.      Thanks!

OCTOBER 7, 2011
Dear Parents,
Here's a quick review of this week of school. . .

READING/PHONICS: We are working in the Student Book for Unit 3(G) about a Superdog named Golly. The children listened to a song about things Golly loves to smell such as; gumballs, garbage and grapes. The children are learning to listen for the sound of G at the beginning of words and at the end of words such as flag and frog. Please reinforce this important skill at home with you child. We will complete this unit next week.

MATH: We have completed Topic 2: Comparing and Ordering Numbers to Five.
Next week we will learn to read, write and count numbers 6- 10 and to order
numbers in different ways.

SOCIAL STUDIES: This week we learned about Christopher Columbus. We learned that Columbus was an explorer who sailed across the ocean looking
for a new way to get to the Indies. We listened to stories and songs about Christopher.

RELIGION: We are continuing to learn about the beautiful world God has given us. This week we discussed the land.

SCIENCE: We are continuing to learn about Fall and the changes we see happening around us. We are beginning our unit on the five senses, Over the next few weeks we will explore our sense of sight, hearing, touch taste and smell.

Here what’s happening in kindergarten!

READING/PHONICS: this week we completed the Student Book for Unit 1(C) about a Superkid named Cass. The children listened to Cass sing a song about how she loves to cook food whose names start with the letter c. In this book the children learned to write capital C and lowercase c. They also practiced listening for the sound of c at the beginning of words.

MATH: We have completed our first chapter. In our next chapter the children will learn to sort objects and compare groups.

RELIGION: In unit 1 we are learning about God’s Many Gifts. This week we learned about the gift of Light.

REMINDERS:
• Our Gym Day is Wednesdays. Please have your child wear his/her Gym uniform on this day. Please write their name on the sweat shirt tag.
• Our Library day is on Thursday. Books must be returned from the previous week before a new on can be taken out. Thanks!
• Music class is on Monday. We will have Computer and Art on Fridays.
• Please send in an old T-shirt which can be used as a painting smock for art class. Please write your child’s name clearly on the front. Thanks!

Here is our Weekly Newsletter with a brief review of what we've done in school:

READING/PHONICS: Your child is learning to read with The Rowland Reading Program. Your child will learn about letters in their names, how to write them, what sounds they stand for and how to use them to read and write words. Our first Superkids Student book will be sent home next week.

MATH: We are working on Topic 1 - Numbers to Five-in this chapter your child is learning to:
* Count quantities to five
* Write numerals to five
* Show different ways to show 1- 5 objects.

RELIGION: (Chapter 1) In this chapter the children learned that God made the world and he made all things good.

REMINDERS:
* Please send in a snack each day. Place it in your child's schoolbag not in their lunch-box. Please send a small water bottle or juice box with the snack.
* Please check your child's folder each day. Remove the work we did in school and praise your child's efforts. Sign or initial your child's homework and return it to school the next day. They will not have homework on Fridays. Please empty and return the red folder on Monday. Please return the communication envelopes sent home on Wednesday.
